LaPorte County ARES Traffic Net — Training Item for 16 OCT 2025
Tonight’s training item will focus on the severe storm currently impacting Alaska.
Typhoon Halong
Beginning 8 October, the Alaska State Emergency Operations Center was activated for the remnants of Typhoon Halong — a former Western Pacific typhoon that has brought significant impacts to the state.
Some of the reported effects include:
- Hurricane-force winds
- Flooding
- Landslides
- Disruptions to communication systems
- Closure of airports
Disruption to Communication Systems
Let’s focus on the communications aspect.
In the community of Kipnuk and surrounding areas, both internet and cell phone service have been disrupted. In response, local officials have reestablished connectivity with the Alaska State Emergency Operations Center using Starlink internet and satellite phones.
Call to Action
If a similar disruption occurred here — internet and cell service went down — how would you communicate?
Could you use your amateur radio equipment to pass information or assist local authorities? Do you have a plan to monitor local nets, relay traffic, or support critical messaging when traditional systems fail?
Remember: preparedness starts with each of us.
